Health Council urges rekindling of health care reform in latest report
In 2003, First Ministers created the 2003 Accord on Health Care Renewal, in which they committed to work together to strengthen the public health care system. Five years later, we reviewed their progress and found that although there is much to celebrate, much still falls short of what could - and should - have been achieved by this time. Our report, Rekindling Reform: Health Care Renewal in Canada, 2003-2008 was released on June 4, 2008 and garnered significant media attention across the country. National highlights of news coverage include an interview with CEO, Dr. Donald Juzwishin on CTV's Canada AM, and an editorial in The Globe and Mail (Better when strings attached.) Health Council addresses Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health
On May 6, 2008, Health Council of Canada Chair, Dr. Jeanne Besner, presented to the Committee a pan-Canadian snapshot of progress on the 2004 10-year Plan to Strengthen Health Care. To read details of this presentation in the Health Edition, click here.

Health Council visits innovative health care model for vulnerable populations
Toronto's Seaton House is Canada's largest shelter for homeless men, many of whom live with very poor health due to problems such as chronic health conditions, drug and alcohol addictions, and mental illness. Councillors toured Seaton House on May 13, 2008 to learn more about its innovative approach to providing health care to a population that is inordinately difficult to reach and often marginalized within the health care system. Physicians, nurses, and other health care workers provide on-site care as part of a creative and cost-effective collaboration between the City of Toronto, which operates the facility, and the province, which funds the health care services. Many of these men would otherwise take their health needs to a local emergency department. The on-site approach has been shown to improve health outcomes and save money in the health care system by reducing visits to emergency departments and detox centres. For photos of the visit and to view a video of Seaton House, click here. To read the City of Toronto's summary, click here.

Online poll takes the pulse of Canadians
